McClaren Institute for Health & Quality of Life

Honoring Dr. Edward E. McClaren’s legacy through health equity, education, and opportunity in the Upstate.

HEALTH, HERITAGE & COMMUNITY

A Legacy of Care. A Future of Opportunity.

Dr. Edward E. McClaren opened a medical shelter on Wardlaw Street to care for African American patients during segregation. His commitment to dignity and access remains at the heart of the McClaren Institute for Health & Quality of Life.

ULUS’s stewardship preserves both the historic building and the legacy it carries. The Institute connects that history with health equity, education, and community partnerships—from wellness and resource navigation to mental health support and healthcare career exploration.
