Jane Edna Hunter Empowerment Center
Connecting a legacy of Black leadership with family empowerment, student growth, and community well-being in Anderson County.

A LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT
Opportunity Rooted in Community
Born near Pendleton, Jane Edna Hunter trained as a nurse and became a nationally recognized advocate for African American women. In Cleveland, she helped create the organization that became the Phillis Wheatley Association, connecting housing, education, and employment support.
Her legacy demonstrates how practical resources and opportunity can work together. ULUS’s Anderson initiative carries that spirit into youth leadership, family engagement, educational support, and community wellness.
ULUS’s 2024–25 report describes continued development of the center and its community partnerships. More recent outreach includes a collaboration with the SHIELD health initiative at Welfare Baptist Church, connecting the center’s family-empowerment priorities with wellness.
ANDERSON COUNTY
Local Relationships. A Regional Commitment.
Student learning, family stability, and health do not operate in isolation. The Anderson work connects these priorities through relationships with families and community organizations.
