Sydney’s Journey: Scholarship Support Opens a Path Toward Medicine

MLK Dreamers Scholarship recipient Sydney Beraho reflects on Furman, leadership, and her aspirations to serve the Upstate through medicine.

In its 2024 profile, Urban League of the Upstate introduced Sydney Beraho, a Simpsonville native and Furman University graduate who received an MLK Dreamers Scholarship. The article reported support of $35,000 annually for four years, helping her attend Furman and pursue biomedical sciences with a minor in Medicine, Health, and Culture.

Learning, Leadership, and Representation

Beyond her studies, Sydney served in student government and as Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Panhellenic Council. Her capstone explored representation in healthcare and the relationship between social identity and health outcomes. The profile also described her role in student health outreach and the senior class gift effort.

A Future Focused on Community

At the time of the profile, Sydney was preparing for the MCAT and gaining experience as a medical assistant at Prisma Health Cancer Institute. She hoped to return to serve the Upstate as a physician, with interests in obstetrics and gynecology or pediatrics. ULUS recognized her as an honorary McClaren/AHEC Health Equity Scholar; the story does not confirm her subsequent medical-school enrollment or current employment.
