Urban League of the Upstate’s 2024 introduction to the McClaren Institute for Health & Quality of Life outlined a vision for connecting health equity, education, and cultural learning in the historic McClaren Medical Shelter. The announcement described the preservation and transformation of a site associated with healthcare for Black residents during segregation.
A Vision Built Through Partnerships
The announcement identified community health and wellness work with LiveWell Greenville; the McClaren AHEC Scholars partnership with Upstate AHEC; mental health advocacy and education led by Dr. Asa Briggs; cultural and historical programming with Kendra Williams and Visit Greenville SC; and plans for adult degree completion through College Unbound with support from the Jolley Foundation.
It also acknowledged early public investment and campaign leadership by Dr. Susan Shi, Erwin Maddrey, and Rev. Sean Dogan. These details describe the Institute’s development at the time of the announcement. Former fundraising targets, anticipated start dates, and cohort sizes are not presented here as current opportunities or commitments.
