In its October 2024 update, Urban League of the Upstate described plans for a Cultural and Historical Literacy Center within the historic McClaren Medical Shelter. The proposed center would preserve and share the contributions of Black residents to Greenville and the wider Upstate, connecting the building’s history with opportunities for future generations.
An Active Place for Learning
The published vision included multimedia displays, historical archives, school partnerships, workshops, lectures, and community conversations. ULUS also reported that tours of Greenville sites significant to Black history were already underway, led by Kendra Williams in collaboration with Visit Greenville SC.
The center was envisioned alongside the Institute’s health and wellness programming, with meeting spaces for nonprofits and community groups. The announcement presented cultural literacy and community health as connected parts of the work. These were plans described in 2024; this archival story does not establish the current availability of exhibits, tours, or facilities.
